I just plugged in the trailer for an upcoming trip, and went inside to turn on the fridge and noticed a hissing noise coming from under the fridge through the grate. The noise lasted about a minute, and then got softer for about half a minute, then disappeared altogether.

The fridge wasnt on yet at this point, there was no smell of gas, and the LP detector didn't go off. I'm assuming the inverter/converter, etc. are on the other side of that vent grate.

Is the trailer safe to use? Because it stopped, my dealer won't be able to diagnose anything. I have unplugged it for now to let it all cool down to see if it can be duplicated.

Hmmm...

Weird. I will notify Lerch RV of this post.

See if he has ever had any experience with similar sounds.

Thanks. New question... I'm going to unplug from shore power and lunch, disconnect the battery, then restore shore power. At that point, what reading should I be getting at the battery connection? 12? I'm suspecting something in the converter may have fried, and my hiss was a sizzle instead.

How loud was the hiss and did you smell ammonia? Did you just open and close your refrigerator or freezer door by any chance?

How old is your camper? Did you smell ammonia at all? If it was indeed your refrigerator that made the 'hiss' you may have had an ammonia leak, even if you did not smell it inside, the ammonia could have vented out the exterior refrigerator access panel. If you turn the fridge back on, as the unit heats back up, if you had an ammonia leak you will continue to smell this.

If you have any type of 12 volt or 110v electrical problems in the remainder of the coach. Your 'hiss' may have indeed been a 'sizzle'.

I plugged in the trailer and the fridge wasn't on yet when I heard the hiss/sizzle.

I disconnected the battery and restored shore power and the voltmeter was reading 13.67 on the battery leads. The battery itself showed just over 12 volts.

I removed the vent grate and looked around in there, and aside from some cobwebs, there wasn't anything noticeable.

I did not smell ammonia, and the fridge is nice and cold.

I started the heater, and that ran fine, also.

I will check the rest of the 12 volt and 110v items after work.

13.67 is ok. Did you just close the fridge or freezer door when u heard the hiss? On ours, the vacuum seal makes a loud hissing that fades, just Pom you described. Of course, I'm just throwing some ideas your way. Lerch is the real expert.

Everything that you state in your last post is fine. The RV refrigerator seems to be working fine. If it is getting cold, that means the system is working properly. Your volt meter readings are in the norm as well. I believe you might have the "hissing vacuum seal refer door syndrome" as described by mikhen above. Another neat 'vacuum' phenom, if your slide out is equipped with a slide out, stand with the camper's entry door cracked open and operate your slide out, if you listen close enough, you can hear the vacuum around the cracked entry door.

Thanks everyone.

We leave the fridge and freezer cracked when not in use. I closed it prior to plugging into shorepower. The fridge itself was off. The sound I heard was different than the fridge's sound when the door closes.

Anyway, we're going for it. I'm hoping it was just a one-off oddity from sitting for two weeks... it has been on the road for seven years at this point. Maybe it was getting lonely.

Have a great weekend, all.

Question for you. If I turned the fridge on, opened it within a few seconds of doing so, then closed it, yes, it will make the hissing noise, but this noise was much more subdued. So the question is, would the hiss be not as powerful if I opened and closed the doors within the first few seconds of turning the fridge on, so that full power wasn't built up yet, and could result in a lesser hiss like I heard?

Yeah, I obsessed over this and that is about the only explanation I can think of.

It is louder sometimes on ours. Never gave a thought as to why. Did you have the propane on when you heard the hiss originally? Perhaps you heard air being pushed out of the propane line.

Fired everything up for the last time last week so we could fry a turkey in the mountains. Always sad to shut 'er down for the winter.

Anyway, when I plugged in the shore power to get things charged up, the fridge was already hissing when I got inside... I hadn't even turned its power on yet. The hiss is coming from BEHIND the fridge. If I open the main fridge door, I can hear from in there, too.
