Christmas Village in Philadelphia | Philadelphia | 11/28/2013 to 01/01/2014

Renowned for its adherence to German Christmas traditions, Christmas Village in Philadelphia is stylized after the world-famous Chriskindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany. Christmas Village showcases a remarkable array of quality crafts, amazing foods, great music and real German traditions. A jaunt through this festival is like a trip to the Old Country, and is sure to loosen the Christmas spirit of everyone.

Opening ceremonies include a special appearance by the real Nuremburg Christkind. As per tradition, a recitation of her customary prologue opens the festival. This prologue is the same given at the Nuremburg Festival and hundreds of festivals all over the world. For those not in the know, Christkind is a sort of Christmas Queen and in some ways is seen as the German equivalent to Santa Clause.

At roughly fifty vendors, the selection is relatively large for a winter market and the quality of those vendors are hardly rivaled. In addition to local vendors selling great seasonal gifts, there are impressive selections of German vendors that you won’t find anywhere else. Stop in for traditional and authentic German crafts, including nativity sets, handmade toys, and glass ornaments. Vendors also sell Erzgebirge-brand items that are hard to find anywhere else! As you shop, be serenaded by local choirs and bands that play daily at the central stage.

Come hungry because there is an amazing selection of great German foods to try at this festival. Authentic and heart-warming foods include wursts, soups and pastries to name a few. For those with a sweet tooth, Christmas Village serves up a tantalizing selection of chocolate covered fruits, and toasted nuts. There are also traditional German and Belgium spice cookies including gingerbread and the very traditional spekulatius. Stay warm as you walk around the park, and grab a cup of their famous mulled cider!

Christmas Village runs from Thanksgiving Day till Christmas Eve. Admission is free but the festival is right next to City Hall so parking may get tricky. Festival sponsors recommend that visitors park at the Autopark at JFK Plaza, a parking facility conveniently located one block northwest of the festival.
