Ok, ok... now that I'm drooling... You've all posted the ingredients, now how about the recipe? I have a cast iron maker, but I'm not sure I'm doing it right cause they're always kinda blah... Slice of bread, apple filling, some sugar and cinnamon, another slice of bread, and into the fire it goes...

What am I missing?

Only thing it looks like you're missing is buttering the outside of the bread. At least that is what I do.

Other then that it looks like you got it right.

Definitely buttering the outside of the bread is the key. It's just like making a grilled cheese sandwich except you use all kinds of other stuff on the inside. Give that a try.

I stumbled on a few new recipes that I'm going to try at our next outing....

The Mountain Pierogie: Mashed potatoes, cheddar cheese and sauteed onions.

Buffalo Pie: Chopped precooked chicken, Frank's Redhot and pepper jack cheese. Dip in either ranch or bleu cheese dressing.

Lasagna Pie: precooked ground beef, ricotta cheese, provolone cheese, spaghetti sauce. (I would probable put garlic butter on the outside)

That chicken, bacon, and cheese one sounds really good. Just found recipes for tacos and tuna melts to try too. I can't wait to try these.

The ones made by ROME seem to work the best for us.

Leftovers are wonderful in mountain pies! This past week while camping at Colonel Denning State Park, we made mountain pies from leftover teriyaki chicken, leftover hawaiian chicken, leftover meatballs and leftover Chinese food (combination of chicken & broccoli, sesame chicken and lo mein)...just chop up the fillings (leftovers) into small pieces and put in the bread with some cheese. We used sourdough bread and on the meatball ones, put a little garlic salt on the outside when we buttered it. I always struggle to use leftovers when camping and hate to throw them out...this was a great way to keep it from going to waste!
