last summer we had a mountain pies only weekend. If you wanted to eat, it had to be in a mountain pie....

meatball
pizza
sausage gravy
bacon/ham, egg n cheese
reuben
cheeseburger
spaghetti with garlic butter on outside of bread
peanut butter and banana
peanut butter and jelly
ham and cheese

Apple and cherry are popular too.

Tried two new ones this past weekend.

Blackberry (filling) with marshmallows and peanut butter with marshmallows.

They were great!

I like Pizza the best.

Ham and Cheese would come in second.

I missed not having some Memorial Day Weekend

We had Mountain Pies for dinner Sunday evening after returning from the water park. Pizza, ham and cheese, apple pies. Then the kids had smores. Making me hungry just thinking about it.

We like many of the ones that have been listed here are a couple we make that I didn't see listed.

Grilled chicken strips, Monteray Jack cheese, BBQ sauce
(you can use your favorite cheese sometimes we use hot pepper)

Roast Beef with Cheddar Cheese

Graham cracker, banana, marshmallow (you can add choc too) taste like banana cream pie

Cream cheese with your favorite pie filling our favorites are cherry and blueberry add graham cracker to make it better.

we are constantly experimenting with our left overs while at camp some are winners and some well... better left not to try again :o)

I need to plan a weekend where I only make mountain pies. There are some delicous sounding recipes on here.

Would save a bit on groceries too.

I happen to have a bag of grilled chicken strips in the freezer...sounds like a recipe for me to try when we go to Shawnee next weekend.

We will be in site 244 if anyone wants to come visit.

I haven't had a mountain pie in probably 15 years lol, I guess I'll have to be on the lookout for an iron. Do they still make the iron ones, or are they all aluminum now?

Found some nice cast iron ones at a store just past Glendale Lake. They were like $16.

The aluminum one I have from Wally World is too flimsy.

Ok, ok... now that I'm drooling... You've all posted the ingredients, now how about the recipe? I have a cast iron maker, but I'm not sure I'm doing it right cause they're always kinda blah... Slice of bread, apple filling, some sugar and cinnamon, another slice of bread, and into the fire it goes...

What am I missing?

Only thing it looks like you're missing is buttering the outside of the bread. At least that is what I do.

Other then that it looks like you got it right.

Definitely buttering the outside of the bread is the key. It's just like making a grilled cheese sandwich except you use all kinds of other stuff on the inside. Give that a try.

I stumbled on a few new recipes that I'm going to try at our next outing....

The Mountain Pierogie: Mashed potatoes, cheddar cheese and sauteed onions.

Buffalo Pie: Chopped precooked chicken, Frank's Redhot and pepper jack cheese. Dip in either ranch or bleu cheese dressing.

Lasagna Pie: precooked ground beef, ricotta cheese, provolone cheese, spaghetti sauce. (I would probable put garlic butter on the outside)

That chicken, bacon, and cheese one sounds really good. Just found recipes for tacos and tuna melts to try too. I can't wait to try these.

Leftovers are wonderful in mountain pies! This past week while camping at Colonel Denning State Park, we made mountain pies from leftover teriyaki chicken, leftover hawaiian chicken, leftover meatballs and leftover Chinese food (combination of chicken & broccoli, sesame chicken and lo mein)...just chop up the fillings (leftovers) into small pieces and put in the bread with some cheese. We used sourdough bread and on the meatball ones, put a little garlic salt on the outside when we buttered it. I always struggle to use leftovers when camping and hate to throw them out...this was a great way to keep it from going to waste!

I like the leftover idea. Don't know about the Chinese food though. I'd be filling our black tank pretty quick after that.

Really need to get my blogs back up to date
