Usually a bent main roller is grounds for a replacement. Might save you a headache in the end. Also did the awning arms bend/contract at all? If so, the awning manufacturers suggest replacing them as well.

Sorefoot, I will have to get you directions on the awning spring rewind from one of our techs...however I do not think they use the method that you described. Since we might have only one tech over 6' tall. :)
