D & L Bike Trail

In case you haven't heard about this one, it is a 165 mile rail trail that runs from just north of White Haven to Bristol (just north of Philly). There are a few sections that remain to be completed near Jim Thorpe and also in the Allentown area. Most of the trail runs alongside of the Lehigh River, and the scenery can be really beautiful, especially in the Lehigh Gorge park area. My wife and I have biked most of the trail from White Haven to Bethlehem, and are hoping to try the rest of the trail at some point.

If you have any questions on the Lehigh Valley sections of the trail, post them here and I will do my best to answer them.

The closest trailhead to that area would be on Rte 329 in Northampton. I generally use the River Road or Cove Road trailheads just off of Rte 145 (a few miles north of 329), or else drive into Slatington. We also use a place in Jim Thorpe that runs a shuttle up to Whitehaven and then we bike the 25 miles back to town. I heard that they opened up another 10 miles of trail north of Whitehaven, but haven't tried that section yet.

I took this picture from the trail where it crosses the Lehigh river near the Glen Onoko access point (Lehigh Gorge state park).
